VALUES, through hiking and urban trekking, also intends to develop motor skills and transversal skills - such as observation and critical and logical thinking - to stimulate the desire to learn and that of constant research. Without forgetting the environmental component: the project will be useful in conveying to young people the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle, but also awareness of the environment around us and respect for the mountains, which must always be approached in safety. The direct recipients of VALUES are therefore schools, with teachers and students aged between 6 and 15 and resident in the countries of France, Italy and Spain. Schools will be offered an innovative teaching method through sport, applicable not only to history, but also to other subjects such as natural sciences, civic education and geography. The project will also lead to the creation of a network of experiences and a methodological manual that can be used by teachers across Europe.
The second meeting foreseen by the project took place on 4 and 5 November in Reus- Catalunya- Spain, hosted by the Spanish partner CEBC.
The two intense days began with the institutional meeting at the headquarters of the Comarque de Baix Camp in the presence of the President and the four delegations involved in the project.
During the project presentation meeting, Comarque's willingness to develop the historical and cultural aspects and the exchange of experiences between the subjects present emerged. A new meeting with the President was then held in the evening in which the reflections gained during the visit to the various places emerged. The day continued with a bus excursion accompanied by some historians and local guides in the various Comarques interested in the battle of the Ebro.
The first place visited was the town of Felix, a locality at the time hosting an important industry, therefore subject to aerial bombardments. The completely renovated and accessible to the public air-raid shelter was visited. Second stage at the trenches in the hilly area rearranged at the locality of Les Devees and the shelters as rest areas between one fight and another. A short distance away we visited the 'village that cannot be seen', i.e. a village made up of small stone caves hidden by dense woodland vegetation which sheltered it from the sight of Franco's reconnaissance planes. The village overlooking the surrounding hills was strategic as it offered an observation point on troop movements and the command of the republican forces was based there. Penultimate stop at the Memorial de les Camposines in La Fatarella, the first monument erected in memory of all the fighters including many from other nations, in particular belonging to the International Brigades. The tour of the places concluded in Gandesa with further exchanges of information between the various delegations and local cultural operators. In the late afternoon, upon returning to Reus, a meeting was held to consider the progress of the project, examine any critical issues and plan the next activities. It turned out that all the project objectives were fully achieved and no critical issues emerged.
The second day was dedicated to visiting the “La Patacada” anti-aircraft shelter located in the historic center of Reus. Completely restructured and with a large display of explanatory panels, accompanied by the city's official experts, we visited the large underground structure originally planned for a capacity of 2.700 people. The construction began on 30 October 1937 and completed on 20 August 1938, with a final capacity of 1.218 people. Five public entrances plus four corresponding to the four galleries were built. The tour of the city of Reus then continued towards historical places and also more recent events visible through some murals made in public places.
